The quickest, most satisfying way to get beautiful skin that doesn't suck.
The quickest, most satisfying way to get beautiful skin that doesn't suck.
If you're anything like me, your 30-something skin isn't exactly where you thought it would be. Sure, general covid-related anxiety and endless lockdowns don't help (hello, "maskne") but I'm constantly amazed at how and when my skin will randomly choose to break out in bumps, blackheads, or a nice, giant zit. Other than sticking to a very strict cleansing routine, I've found something that works for me is giving my pores a proper clean from time to time using a pore vacuum.
Helping to remove excess oil and congestion as well as blackheads, pimples, and general impurities, pour vacuums and cleaners can make it easier for skincare to further penetrate the skin. There are a huge range of products on the market - with different bells, whistles, and costs as a result - but if you're looking for a DIY solution in between trips to the facialist or you're looking to treat unexpected breakouts and give clogged skin a break, they're a great option to have in your bathroom cabinet.

You can exfoliate, suction, and massage the skin, renewing and revitalising it. "The suction power is really good. Best to do your first treatment on the lowest setting until you gain more experience and technique. Super happy I purchased as my skin has been suffering with skin clinics closed at the moment. My face feels super smooth. Pair it with a face mask for the best result."
With an average of 4.6/5 star reviews, this product has a whole heap of fans, as it does double duty to both remove gunk, dirt, and congestion from pores and make it easier to apply serums and moisturisers using ultrasonic vibrations. "Totally Pore-mazing" writes one, adding, "You literally see the dirt lifting out of your pores... amazing results, super smooth skin. Clearer, fresher complexion. Chuck away those useless face scrubs, this is the best!"
A hardworking blackhead extractor, this device has four different attachments and an added LED light (blue or red) to further optimise your skincare routine. "Does a pretty good job clearing your pores," writes one reviewer, adding, "I usually do this after taking a long shower and see good results the next day."
This blackhead remover has five intensity levels offering gentle to intense suction along with an LCD screen to make it easy to see what level you're operating at. It comes with three heads: a large round tip for intense suction and pore cleaning, a small tip for smaller areas and sensitive skin, and an oval tip which is great for working on fine lines and improving elasticity. The device is also USB rechargeable and portable. "Great price and product," writes one happy reviewer, adding, "Very easy to use, amazing quality! I have tried a few in the past that have been quite average but this one really gave me results especially around my nose and chin area."

With an LED light for easy operation and USB rechargeable, it can suck out blackheads, reduce oil and grease and tighten skin. It has dozens of good reviews and an average rating of 4/5. "Been having trouble with blackheads on my nose area and facial scrubs don’t seem to work for me. Tried this Enarit blackhead remover device and worked amazing! Instant results and easy to use," says one reviewer.
The PMD Beauty Classic is a vacuum suction device as well as offering clinical-grade exfoliation and microdermabrasion. The ultimate multi-tasker, it exfoliates, sucks away dirt and grime, and absorbs impurities to leave skin looking renewed and revived. It comes with six different discs with varying coarseness and intensity levels and gets an average 4.8/5 on Adore Beauty. "LOVE!", writes one reviewer. No blackhead will be left hiding after you take to it with this clever device which contains zit sucker, LED light and camera in one. By downloading a device you can see your skin issues in real-time, watch the suction process itself and make sure you're accurately nabbing every nasty little blackhead the first time around. "This little face vacuum is awesome," writes one happy customer. "Yes the suction power is quite intense but if you read the directions on how to use it then you should be successful. You can apply this to an app if you choose and then you get the full visual of what’s happening on your face. That’s super-duper gross to see, but very satisfying at the same time."
This blackhead extractor tool is currently on sale at ASOS and comes with five suction heads and three intensity levels, along with a built-in LED light to help you spot your spots (so to speak) as well as improve skin texture and healing. USB rechargeable, it's a great buy for the price. Reviews are a little mixed - people either seem to love it or find that it didn't work, but again, while it's on sale it might be a good time to see if it works for you.
The fancier big sister of PMD's other microdermabrasion kit (above) this one has a few more bells and whistles including more size options and an extended range of discs to really get the most out of your treatment.
With five speed levels and three attachments, this is a bargain buy if you're looking to tip your toe in the waters of vacuum pore cleaners. USB chargeable and fully portable, this is an affordable option when it comes to getting your skin on the right track.
Pore vacuums essential work to remove blackheads, oil, and dirt build-up by suctioning the nasties out and fostering cell renewal. They can give you a deeper clean than what might be possible with a scrub or a brush.
Yes and no. You do need to have clean skin (no makeup or product) and it helps if you can use a steam treatment before to open your pores up even more. The heat from a shower should do it, but you can also use a hot towel.
If you have normal, regular-old skin that suffers from the odd pimple or breakout, they're perfectly safe to use. The key is making sure you're using the correct level of suction for your skin and always start on the lowest setting (ie, stronger isn't always better - you don't want to look like you've got a love bite on your cheek!) If you suffer from any skin problems like eczema, psoriasis or rosacea, you might want to chat to a doctor or dermatologist before using one.
