In May 2022, a lawsuit was filed against Snapchat’s parent company in the US District Court of the 18th Judicial Circuit of DuPage, Illinois.

In that lawsuit, the Snapchat parent company was accused of violating Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) by illegally collecting Snapchat users’ biometric information without user consent. Also, check- Instagram Candid Challenges: Everything About the New Feature

This Biometric Information Privacy Act protects users living in Illinois from apps that collect unauthorized private data such as fingerprints, face scans, retina scans, and more.

According to the reports, the court didn’t find in favor of Snapchat or the plaintiff. This means Snapchat hasn’t admitted its fault.

When asked about the issue, a Snapchat spokesperson said, “We continue to vehemently deny that Snap Lenses violate BIPA, which was designed to require notice and consent before collecting biometric information used to identify people.”

He added, “We deeply value the privacy of our community, and Snapchat Lenses do not collect biometric data that can be used to identify a specific person or engage in facial identification. The lenses are designed to identify an eye or a nose as being part of a face but not to identify an eye or a nose as belonging to any specific person.”

“Moreover, even the limited data that is used to power Lenses are never sent to Snap’s servers – the data never leaves the user’s device. Since we are confident that Snapchat Lenses do not violate BIPA, out of an abundance of caution and as a testament to our commitment to user privacy, earlier this year, we rolled out an in-app consent notice for Snapchatters in Illinois.”
